Thursday General Session - System Update Required: Managing Risk in the AI Era

This course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence and the risks and opportunities associated with its utilization in healthcare. We will define these terms as we explore current and future uses of AI in healthcare. We will also help you to identify potential risks to patient safety which could lead to medical professional liability claims as opportunities arise to incorporate AI into your practices. Risk management strategies are provided in an effort to decrease liability risk and improve patient safety when AI is utilized in healthcare practices.

Laurette Côté MBA, CPHRM, is a Senior Risk Management Consultant for ProAssurance. She has diverse experience as a director of hospital and clinic operations, training, compliance, education, and healthcare risk/quality management. She is responsible for managing online educational courses for physicians and staff. Laurette advises on liability issues and solutions, authors articles, and delivers seminars for physicians, staff, and practice administration. 

SESSION OBJECTIVES:

Participants will:

  • Describe current trends, legislation, and emerging models shaping AI use in healthcare, with emphasis on federal and state regulatory activity and disclosure requirements.  
  • Recognize legal, ethical, and patient safety risks associated with AI-enabled tools—such as ambient listening, chatbots, and algorithmic decision support—particularly regarding informed consent, privacy, and bias. 
  • Apply best practices for disclosure, documentation, and clinician oversight to mitigate liability and promote responsible, patient-centered integration of AI into clinical workflows.
